Happy to see you, March
In my mind, March is synonymous with the start of spring. The sun is setting slightly later, my flower seeds have been planted, and we’re having mild days more than we’re not. I’m so excited to start to see my new backyard come to life this month… it’s going to be a fun surprise watching each tree and plant turn green and bloom. I don’t have too many plans this month, which leaves lots of room for spontaneous trips to the coast and wherever else my heart desires.
On Tap this Month
This month is about being fully present, open to new opportunities and soaking in every single day.
INTENTIONAL SCROLLING
This is something I started to implement last month and have found it so helpful for both time management and my mental health. I used to spend hours scrolling with the excuse of ‘but it’s for my job,’ when really, it was just a time suck and always ended in feeling less than. I know I won’t cut out scrolling completely, but I decided to put some loose guidelines in place. I don’t always stick to these, and I’m okay with that, but it’s really helped me reframe how I use social media.
The rules: If I want to scroll “aimlessly,” I’m allowed to only if I’ve posted on my page first (work first, play second rule). My new safe space on TikTok is the Friends tab–going on there to engage with and support mutual friends always leaves me feeling so uplifted. I’ve met such a beautiful community of women online, and spending my scrolling time supporting them is a much more positive experience than being served content that doesn’t uplift me. That’s just what I’ve found works for me!
BUILDING COMMUNITY
On the topic of community–this is becoming a huge focus for me. I realized how much less isolating my job is when I feel like I have a “group” online–both fellow content creators and my own followers. I used to really just keep my head down and view social media as work, but the way I’ve been engaging (mentioned above) is SO much more fun.
A dear friend of mine, Brittany, has spoken a lot recently about building community offline, and it’s something that has really hit home for me. When I moved back to Raleigh, I realized how many people I could have in my corner if I just put myself out there. It can be really challenging to make friends as an adult, but sitting at home alone isn’t going to help change that. I have so many connections just waiting to be turned into friendships if I make the effort and allow myself time to nurture them.
BEST DAY EVER MENTALITY
I recently saw online someone who wakes up everyday saying “today’s going to be the best day ever” and then looks for all the little things that make the day amazing. It’s really similar to the lucky girl syndrome mentality… it truly helps. It’s all about gratitude, being present and engaged in your own life, and not taking anything for granted. Giving this a try this month–hoping to have a lot of best days ever!
ACTING UPON THOUGHTS
As a type-A controller and over-analyzer/planner… you can imagine how much I dwell on and obsess over decisions. I’m usually fairly decisive, but it takes me a while to get to that point. Call it working on my spontaneity, but I’d like to work on acting upon my harmless intrusive thoughts. I dreamt up a project for my bedroom over the weekend, and I was at the lumber store that afternoon making it happen–and that felt GOOD.
Whether it’s acting upon all those design ideas I have without hesitation (because really, what’s the worst that could happen), or booking that trip that I’ve been talking about for weeks, I’m going to focus on living less in my head and more out in the world.
OUTDOORS > INDOORS
My motto for this month: if it’s above 65º and it can be done outside, don’t do it inside. This goes for working, eating, exercising, reading… you get the point. I talk all day long about how I can’t wait for the spring, so I plan to make the absolute most of it.
